Invisible Warriors | Film Screening + Discussion

In honor of Women’s History Month, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is hosting a screening of Invisible Warriors: African American Women in World War II and a conversation exploring the legacy of Black women whose work helped shape American history.
The film highlights the stories of more than 600,000 African American women who joined the wartime industrial workforce during World War II. Often referred to as the Black “Rosie the Riveters,” these women challenged racism, sexism, and discrimination while helping power the nation’s war effort and expanding opportunities for future generations.
Following the screening, Deborah Bowie, President and CEO of BCRI, will moderate a discussion with:
- Janice Kelsey, Foot Soldier, Published Author, and Retired Educator
- Wilhelmina Thomas, Community Historian and Living History Interpreter
- Reverend Gwendolyn Webb, Foot Soldier and Civil Rights Activist
Together, they will explore how the Black Rosies–through their fight, legacy, and work ethic—influenced a generation of young people who would later become Foot Soldiers and activists in the Civil Rights Movement.
