BCRI 30th Anniversary Celebration

November 18, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm

$250

We are pleased to announce the celebration of our 30th anniversary! A week of special events, presented in part by Regions and Alabama Power, will include major festivities and the recognition of The Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award on the evening of Friday, November 18, 2022 at Haven in Birmingham’s Lakeview District.

The opening of The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute will be commemorated with a collection of memorable experiences. We’ll be providing a space for families to learn and discuss feelings/emotions involving societal injustice and violence with the return of our Community of Readers series on November 12th at 10:30am in the BCRI bookstore. Join us for a poetry reading, singing and art activities as we feature A Wreath for Emmett Till by Marilyn Nelson.  Anne and Emmett, a one-act play depicting an imaginary conversation between Anne Frank and Emmett Till will be staged in partnership with the Birmingham Jewish Federation and the Alabama Holocaust Education Center at The Birmingham Museum of Art on November 13th. The community is invited to enjoy free sweets and visit the historic galleries at BCRI at no cost on November 15th. We’ll unveil Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley: Let the World See on November 19th. The national touring exhibit was created by The Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley Institute, the Emmett Till Interpretive Center, the Till family, and The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis to share the tragic story of American racism—past and present—and the story of communities committed to racial healing.

We’ll commemorate the 1992 opening of the Institute with a celebration at Haven on November 18th featuring R&B singer/songwriter, Lalah Hathaway; special guest greetings; honors for distinguished leaders in the fight for civil rights; and an exhibit celebrating 30 years of vision. The exhibit will be on display at 6:00pm and the celebration will begin at 7:30pm.
