Community of S.T.R.E.A.M.ers | Women in Aviation

March 14 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Community of S.T.R.E.A.Mers will explore the powerful stories of two trailblazing aviators: Captain Theresa Claiborne, the first Black woman pilot in the U.S. Air Force, and Captain Tee Frisby, a Birmingham native whose aviation career inspires young people to pursue their dreams fearlessly. Through an engaging, interdisciplinary session combining Reading, Arts, and Technology, students will learn how these women shaped their own narratives despite historical barriers—and how they, too, can take ownership of their stories.

This month also marks the launch of a new exhibit expansion titled “Miss Representation,” which examines the misrepresentation and underrepresentation of women—especially Black women—across history, media, education, and public memory. The exhibit emphasizes the importance of seeing women as full, complex leaders and creators within our society.

To bring these themes to life, students will participate in a hands-on activity where they create their own newspaper front page. Using a guided template we provide, participants will craft articles, headlines, and images that reflect their voices, their futures, and the stories they feel deserve more visibility. The goal is to empower students with literacy, creativity, and agency—reaffirming that their stories matter and deserve to be told.

This workshop will be led by Kizzy Frisby of Saylor’s Village, daughter of Captain Tee Frisby.
