JOIN US TO DEFEND LEGACY
For 33 years, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute has served as a steward of Birmingham’s civil rights legacy, honoring those who fought tirelessly for justice and equality.
Today, that legacy is under threat. Efforts to restrict education, erase history, and roll back equity initiatives make our mission more urgent than ever.
The Institute is uniquely positioned to stand in the gap as a beacon of education, reflection, and inspiration in our region. But we cannot do it alone.
As we continue to Reimagine the Institute together, we invite you to join us in responding to this moment.
Your attendance is an investment in the future of the Institute.
Approximately 65% of your ticket purchase will go directly to fund operations and programs at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.
2025 Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award Recipient
Eric H. Holder, Jr.
82nd Attorney General and Chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee
The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is proud to honor Eric H. Holder Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and the first African American to hold that office, with the 2025 Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award.
A lifelong public servant, Mr. Holder has embodied the values central to Reverend Shuttlesworth’s legacy: courage, clarity, and an unwavering pursuit of justice. As Attorney General under President Barack Obama, he prioritized civil rights enforcement, took bold steps to protect voting rights, reduce sentencing disparities, and address systemic inequities in the justice system. His tenure was marked by efforts to defend marriage equality and challenge voter suppression.
Today, Mr. Holder continues to champion democracy as Chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, ensuring fair maps and protecting every citizen’s right to vote. His life’s work reflects principled leadership and the enduring fight for civil rights.
About the Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award
Named after one of Birmingham’s most courageous civil rights leaders, this award recognizes individuals whose work advances the cause of civil and human rights around the world. Established in 2002, the Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award serves as an enduring tribute to Rev. Shuttlesworth’s legacy of leadership, courage, and conviction.
This award is a public recommitment to the values that defined Shuttlesworth’s life and Birmingham’s pivotal role in the global fight for justice. It affirms that the struggle for civil and human rights is not a relic of the past, but a living legacy that demands ongoing courage and collective action.
In a time when history is being challenged, restricted, or erased, the Institute remains a steadfast defender of truth. By uplifting those who carry the work forward, the Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award ensures that Birmingham’s story continues to inspire and call others to action.
