Author Reading with Carolyn McKinstry

September 13, 2025 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join us for an empowering morning with Carolyn McKinstry, author of While the World Watched.

On September 15, 1963, a bomb planted by the Ku Klux Klan tore through Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church. Fourteen-year-old Carolyn Maull McKinstry had just left the restroom where four of her friends were killed. That moment changed her life—and history—forever.

In While the World Watched, McKinstry shares her gripping firsthand account of growing up in the Jim Crow South, surviving the violence of segregation, and bearing witness to the pivotal struggles and triumphs of the Civil Rights Movement. Her story is both a deeply personal memoir and a broader reflection on how far we have come as a nation, and how far we still must go.
