Community of Readers: Celebrating Earth Day at the BCRI

April 26, 2025 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join us for a special Community of Readers event in honor of Earth Day at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.

This month’s featured titles—City Green by DyAnne DiSalvo-Ryan and Harlem Grown by Tony Hillery, illustrated by Jessie Hartland—highlight the power of community, environmental stewardship, and what happens when young minds come together to reimagine the world around them.

City Green celebrates its 25th anniversary with a timeless story of a young girl who transforms a vacant city lot into a thriving green space with the help of her neighbors. Harlem Grown shares the true story of how one man’s vision helped students turn an abandoned lot into a lush urban farm, feeding both bodies and spirits.

The books will be read by community readers Rita Collins and Kim Moore. After the reading, families are invited to participate in a hands-on seed planting activity to take a little bit of Earth Day home with them.
