Honoring Shuttlesworth Day

March 18, 2025

Make plans to visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute to honor the birthday (March 18) and legacy of Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth, hometown hero and fearless leader in the Civil Rights Movement who dedicated his life to the fight for justice and equality.

Throughout the week, you can explore special features, images, and artifacts with historical information about Rev. Shuttlesworth’s impact on Birmingham and beyond. Foot Soldiers who played a vital role in the movement will be present in the galleries, sharing their firsthand experiences and reflections. And be sure to stop by the Commons on Tuesday 3/18 to watch the APT documentary on his life, Shuttlesworth.

This is a unique opportunity to connect with history in a meaningful way, hear powerful stories from those who lived it, and celebrate the life of a man whose courage helped shape the course of civil rights in America. We invite you to visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute to reflect, learn, and honor his legacy.
