SUMMARY:Author Reading with Carolyn McKinstry
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an empowering morning with Carolyn McKinstry\, author of While the World Watched. \nOn September 15\, 1963\, a bomb planted by the Ku Klux Klan tore through Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church. Fourteen-year-old Carolyn Maull McKinstry had just left the restroom where four of her friends were killed. That moment changed her life—and history—forever. \nIn While the World Watched\, McKinstry shares her gripping firsthand account of growing up in the Jim Crow South\, surviving the violence of segregation\, and bearing witness to the pivotal struggles and triumphs of the Civil Rights Movement. Her story is both a deeply personal memoir and a broader reflection on how far we have come as a nation\, and how far we still must go. \nEvent Details\n\nDate: Saturday\, September 13 \nTime: Reading + Discussion: 10:00 AM | Book Signing: 11:00 AM \nLocation: BCRI Commons \nDon’t miss this chance to hear directly from Carolyn McKinstry as she shares her journey from tragedy to testimony. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Register below! \nREGISTRATION

SUMMARY:BCRI x Sidewalk Cinema: Summer Film Series – Ain't No Back to a Merry-Go-Round
DESCRIPTION:To close out the 2025 Summer Film Series\, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is proud to present Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round in partnership with the Harry B. Maring Community Enrichment Fund of the Birmingham Jewish Foundation. \nThis documentary highlights the 1960 integration of Glen Echo Amusement Park in Maryland\, a story of courageous interfaith activism that helped move the civil rights movement forward. \nIn the spirit of that collaboration\, we’ll begin the evening with an Intercommunity Networking Hour. Join us early to make meaningful connections and explore shared values. \nDoors open + Intercommunity Networking: 5:00 PM\nFilm Screening: 6:00 PM \nThis event is free and open to the public. Come ready to learn and be inspired! Reserve your tickets below. \nAbout the Film:  \nAIN’T NO BACK TO A MERRY-GO-ROUND is the untold story of the first organized interracial civil rights protest in U.S. history. When 5 Howard University students sat on a Maryland carousel in 1960\, the arrests made headlines. When the white community near Glen Echo Amusement Park joined the Black students in picketing\, an extraordinary history-making partnership was born. The pickets attracted Nazis\, Congressman\, and a press avalanche. Picketing together over the sweltering summer led to partying together\, and union organizers mentored student activists. Ten 1961 Freedom Riders\, including Stokely Carmichael\, were incubated on the Glen Echo picket line\, and the carousel arrests were challenged in the Supreme Court case. With never-before seen footage\, and immersive storytelling by Emmy-award winning director Ilana Trachtman (Praying with Lior\, Black in Latin America\, The Pursuit)\, four living protesters rescue this forgotten history\, revealing the price\, and the power\, of heeding the impulse to activism. AIN’T NO BACK TO A MERRY-GO-ROUND. Includes voiceover by noted actors Jeffrey Wright\, Mandy Patinkin\, Bob Balaban\, Lee Grant\, Peter Gallagher\, Dominique Thorne\, Alysia Reiner and Tracie Thoms. \nREGISTRATION: \n\n

SUMMARY:BCRI x Sidewalk Cinema: Summer Film Series – I’m Still Here: A Life on Dynamite Hill
DESCRIPTION:This month’s Summer Film Series screening is presented in partnership with the City of Birmingham’s Department of Community Development. \nWe’re proud to present I’m Still Here: A Life on Dynamite Hill\, a film that honors the legacy of the Dynamite Hill community while inviting us to imagine its future. \nFollowing the film\, we’ll host a discussion with featured film subjects Jefferson Drew\, Barbara Shores\, and Judge Houston Brown\, reflecting on the history of Dynamite Hill and what’s possible moving forward. \nIn 2023\, the Birmingham Housing Authority and the City of Birmingham were awarded a $50 million Choice Neighborhoods Implementation grant focused on the Smithfield-College Hills-Graymont community. Birmingham is the first city in Alabama to receive this grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. \nAs development prepares to move forward\, this screening offers a moment to pause\, honor the past\, and envision the future together. \nAttendees can also learn more about the upcoming Smithfield Public Art Walk\, a project led by the City’s Community Development Department. \nFilm Screening: 6:00 PM\nDiscussion: 6:35 PM\nLocation: Sidewalk Cinema \nThis event is free and open to the public. Come ready to learn\, listen\, and be part of the conversation! \nReserve Your Tickets!\n \nAbout the Film:  \nMembers of the Leadership Birmingham Class of 2022 received the rare gift of a living history lesson about a turning point in American history from those who lived it – Jefferson Drew\, Barbara Shores\, and Judge Houston Brown. \nWhat happened on Birmingham\, Alabama’s Center Street is a scar on American history\, but the voices of Dynamite Hill speak with strength and grace about how they faced unimaginable hatred\, with one repeated refrain: “I’m still here.” \nJefferson Drew encouraged the group to not just take the story to heart\, but to take action. \nThat meeting inspired us to create a multi-disciplinary media vessel for the story that opened our Leadership Birmingham experience\, taking action to educate others about our history in hope that we can create societies that abide no hatred. \nIf this story opens one set of eyes\, emboldens one young voice\, or changes one heart\, we will have been successful.

SUMMARY:BCRI x Sidewalk Cinema: Summer Film Series – Shuttlesworth
DESCRIPTION:BCRI x Sidewalk Cinema: Summer Film Series – Shuttlesworth\nThe Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is partnering with Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema for a Summer Film Series! We’re using film to spark honest conversation across generations\, in hopes of moving us into action together. \nWe’re kicking things off with a screening of Shuttlesworth\, a documentary that dives into the fearless leadership of Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth and his fight for civil rights in Birmingham. \nAfter the film\, stick around for a candid conversation on leadership—what it meant in the past\, what it means now\, and what it needs to become. The discussion will feature voices from across generations\, each bringing their own perspectives and ideas of what leadership should look like to meet this moment.  \nDiscussion participants include:\n \nRaven Johnson\, Steven Stafford\, Marie Sutton\, and Reverend Dr. Thomas L. Wilder\, Jr. \nDoors Open: 5:00 PM \nFilm Screening: 6:00–7:00 PM\nDiscussion: 7:00–8:00 PM\nLocation: Sidewalk Cinema \nThis event is free and open to the public. Come ready to learn\, listen\, and be part of the conversation! \nReserve Your Tickets!\n \nAbout the Film:  \n“Shuttlesworth” traces the unique crucible of Birmingham’s brutal industrial history in creating what Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, called the “most segregated city in America” and the people that were willing to take it on – personified in the fearless\, indomitable Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. \nHis tireless work in the face of beatings at the hands of the KKK and bombing of his own home\, as well as constant harassment by the police and shunning by members of his own community\, was unprecedented in the Movement leadership and inspired legions of Foot Soldiers willing to follow him into the breach. \nBeginning with his segregated childhood in the Oxmoor Valley\, “Shuttlesworth” follows the reverend’s life through Bethel Baptist Church\, the Birmingham Campaign and the reactionary violence unleashed by the white power structure of the city. Through this lens\, “Shuttlesworth” examines the City of Birmingham\, its unique history and culture\, and how the city became the symbol for social justice and the American Civil Rights Movement. \nFeaturing exclusive interviews with Rev. Shuttlesworth\, colleagues and scholars\, the film examines Shuttlesworth’s crucial contributions to the Civil Rights Movement\, which\, in turn\, helped define the national consciousness during the mid to late 20th century and first quarter of the 21st and amplify the integral role that Birmingham played as the catalyst in propelling the Movement onto the national stage.
