SUMMARY:Film & Talkback: Paul Laurence Dunbar: Beyond the Mask
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, March 16\, 2023 at 6 pm\, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute will present a free screening of “Paul Laurence Dunbar: Beyond The Mask” a feature length documentary on the life and legacy of the first African American poet/writer to gain international fame. The filmmaker\, Frederick Lewis\, a professor at Ohio University\, will be on hand to introduce the film and lead a post-screening discussion. \nBorn to former slaves in Dayton\, Ohio\, Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906) is best remembered for his poem “We Wear The Mask” and for lines from “Sympathy” that became the title of Maya Angelou’s famous autobiography “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings.” A clip of Angelou reciting Dunbar’s poem is featured in the film. \nMore than ten years in the making\, “Beyond The Mask” received major funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities with additional support from Ohio Humanities. \nKnown primarily as a poet\, Dunbar also wrote novels\, short stories and essays critical of lynching and Jim Crow laws. He was friends with WEB Dubois and Booker T. Washington and was mentored by Frederick Douglass. His story is really the story of many African Americans at the turn of the century.

SUMMARY:Washington & DuBois: A Matter of Conscience
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Vulcan Park & Museum and Birmingham Children’s Theatre\, and with funding from the Alabama State Council on the Arts\, BCRI Presents Washington & DuBois: A Matter of Conscience. Playwright Lee Shackelford’s dramatic dialogue recounts the philosophies of the two early civil rights activists\, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois. Disagreements between the two leaders were profound\, but they sought a common outcome: securing a better place for Black Americans in U.S. society. \nJoin Birmingham Civil Rights Institute on Saturday\, February 25th in the Community Meeting Room for this free production\, followed by a dialogue with the actors and Mr. Barry McNealy\, BCRI Historical Content Expert

SUMMARY:Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley: Let the World See
DESCRIPTION:Emmett Till\, a Black 14-year-old youth from Chicago\, was visiting family in Money\, Mississippi when he was kidnapped from his great-uncle’s home and savagely beaten and murdered by a group of white men on August 28\, 1955. Weighted by a cotton gin fan\, his lifeless body was thrown into the Tallahatchie River and was found three days later. His torture and murder were retaliation for violating the social mores of the Deep South by whistling at a white woman in a grocery store. Two white men accused of brutally murdering the young 14-year-old Emmett were acquitted by an all-white jury in 67 minutes. For Emmett’s funeral\, his mother\, Mamie Till-Mobley\, insisted that the coffin containing his body be left open. She wanted the world to see what was unjustly done to her son. Over 100\,000 people viewed his body at Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ in Chicago over three days. Photographs of his mutilated body circulated internationally\, and people stood up who had never stood up before. Emmett’s story and Mamie’s activism served as catalysts to the Civil Rights Movement. \nThe Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley Institute\, the Emmett Till Interpretive Center\, the Till family\, and The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis are creating a national touring exhibit to share the tragic story of American racism—past and present—and the story of communities committed to racial healing. \nThis fall\, a vandalized roadside sign that marked a child’s murder will travel across the country. The subject matter is difficult\, but the creators of the exhibit\, the Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley Institute\, the Emmett Till Interpretive Center\, the Till family\, and The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis\, believe it is vital to educate families on what has happened in the past in hopes of fostering racial harmony and reconciliation today. \nBecause of the difficult subject matter\, this exhibit is recommended for children 10 and older\, and those between 10 and 18 years of age should be accompanied by an adult. \nThis project was made possible in part by The National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom\, The Maddox Foundation\, The Institute for Museum and Library Services\, The Historic Preservation Fund and the National Park Service.

SUMMARY:The Long Civil Rights Movement in STEM
DESCRIPTION:The launch of NASA’s James Webb (JW) telescope December 25\, 2021 kicked off an exciting time for space-enthusiasts. One hundred more times powerful than the Hubble Telescope\, scientists hope JW will fulfill many missions. One is to look back in time\, 13.7 billion years ago\, to the beginnings of our universe. Another is to seek Earth-like atmospheres\, capable of sustaining life. \nA group of thought partners – Birmingham Civil Rights Institute\, NASA\, National Park Service\, Birmingham Museum of Art and the Magic City Poetry Festival – saw the historic launch of the James Webb telescope as an opportunity to bring the community together around this astounding achievement and bridge the gap between the scientific and cultural implications of space exploration. \nThe race to space in the 1960s coincided with the civil rights movement\, illuminating and ultimately challenging the laws and norms that held segregation in place. SUMMARY:The Color of Care
DESCRIPTION:The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is pleased to present a special screening of The Color of Care as a part of the 2022 Sidewalk Film Festival’s Black Lens sidebar. \nProduced by Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions and directed by Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning director Yance Ford\, The Color of Care chronicles how people of color suffer from systemically substandard healthcare in the U.S. and how COVID-19 exposed the tragic consequences of this inequity. Using moving personal testimony\, expert interviews\, and disturbing data\, the film reveals the impact of racism on health\, serving as an urgent warning of what must be done to save lives. \nSystemic racism and anti-blackness are a public health crisis\, and we need to seize this moment to open people’s eyes to health disparity and champion real change in the United States. \n“At the height of the pandemic\, I read something that stopped me in my tracks. I read a story about Gary Fowler\, a Black man that died in his home because no hospital would treat him despite his COVID-19 symptoms. As we continued to hear how the racial disparities in our country were exacerbated by the effects of the pandemic\, I felt something needed to be done. This film is my way of doing something\, with the intention that the stories we share serve as both a warning and foster a deeper understanding of what changes need to take place to better serve us all.“ – Oprah Winfrey\, Executive Producer \nClick here to purchase tickets to Sidewalk Film Festival.

SUMMARY:Pride Month Mini-Series
DESCRIPTION:Pride is so much more than an annual festival or rainbow-themed parties. Its important that we acknowledge its roots – how it started off as a protest led by trans women of color—namely Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera—against oppressive forces that tried to get them to silence\, shrink\, and diminish their truth. \nOur inaugural mini series grew consciousness in the queer community for the universality of human conflict. We offered tools for preserving the queer history of one of the nation’s oldest and longest running Pride organizations. The Institute made affirming legal assistance accessible and affordable for our transgender\, aging\, and adopting communities. Our film program examined the valuable contributions of Bayard Rustin which go far deeper than just that of LGBTQ equality. Families were offered help in surmounting the ongoing actions of our legislature which continues challenge the affirmation of gender and sexual individuality. With bills that have been nothing short of prejudicial and unreasonably pointed. There’s no question that our community is more in need of support than ever. \nThrough this series of events\, we investigated how the struggle for civil rights in 1960s Birmingham can serve as a case study of conflict resolution that has global applications. These Pride Month programs helped us to answer the call to champion diversity and inclusion by acknowledging the contributions of all social justice leaders. \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Fair Housing Film
DESCRIPTION:The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute was pleased to partner with The Birmingham Association of Realtors (BAR)\, the Birmingham Realtist Association\, Barnes & Associates Realtors\, Bancorp South | Cadence\, and Arkadia One Studios for the premier of a short documentary film to help educate the public about housing discrimination\, segregation\, and the people working to correct these social and economic wrongs. \nThe historians at BCRI have ensured the historical validity of the documentary – an earnest affirmation to the lawmakers and legendary champions like NAREB co-founder W.H. Hollins. With the guidance of the Birmingham Association of Realtors\, the Birmingham Realtist Association\, and Barnes & Associates Realtors\, the film offers a review of the protected classes of the Fair Housing Act\, prohibited conduct\, penalties\, resources for compliance\, and implementation. \nThe film includes the testimonials of homeowners\, home buyers and renters of color in the Birmingham community. As partners\, we feel confident that these first-hand stories of those who have experienced and are witness to housing discrimination will invoke a spirit of social justice. \nBCRI will utilize this production for educational outreach that combats the housing struggle plaguing our country. The focus of this short long film will be diversity and inclusion. We will reflect on our nation’s history of housing discrimination in a documentary produced in the style of the projects found on the National Association of Realtors website. \nThe intended audience for our production was Realtors\, lenders\, homeowners\, and those seeking to purchase property. The production will also be used as a resource for informing the public of the fair housing practices put in place by our government to prevent discrimination. \nText HOMESFORALL to 44321 to support this continued advocacy. With your help\, we can create positive change for homebuyers!
