DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute\, the Department of Justice\, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation\, this 14th annual\, two-day conference is open to all who are interested in joining the discussion. This year’s conference features presentations by FBI Director Christopher Wray and Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke\, among many others. \nThe conference is free\, but registration is required at https://lnkd.in/gYSnfgFg. \nSince 2006\, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the Federal Bureau of Investigation\, Birmingham Division\, have joined forces to develop training models for law enforcement officials and the community. The resulting conferences on law enforcement and civil rights examine the history of the Civil Rights Movement and encourage law enforcement officials and the community to reflect upon their personal and professional responsibilities in our pluralistic society. The discussion is designed to build trust and open the lines of communication between law enforcement agencies\, their personnel and the communities they serve.

DESCRIPTION:Shining a Light on Human Rights Across Birmingham’s Past\, Present\, and Future. \nStarting at 10 AM\, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute will welcome guests to Heritage Alive!\, a community event where attendees of all ages will create signs\, parade streamers\, and flower bouquets for the Children’s March. Then at 11 AM\, a send-off for Amal will commence outside of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. There will be a greeting by a City Official and a poetry reading by Alabama Poet Laureate Ashley Jones. \nThe Children’s March will begin at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute\, continue through Kelly Ingram Park\, and end at the steps of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. A gospel choir will perform at the church’s steps\, providing a powerful send-off for Amal\, as she leaves Birmingham to continue her journey across America.

DESCRIPTION:The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is proud to partner with the Birmingham Public Library Central Branch to share the Men of Change: Power. Triumph. Truth. exhibit. \nThe exhibit will open at BCRI and the Public Library Central Branch on September 16th and run through December 2nd. \nMen of Change: Power. Triumph. Truth. profiles the revolutionary men—including Muhammad Ali\, James Baldwin\, Ta-Nehisi Coates\, W.E.B Du Bois\, and Kendrick Lamar—whose journeys have altered the history and culture of the country. The achievements of the men are woven within the legacy and traditions of the African-American journey—achievements of excellence in spite of society’s barriers. \nThrough literary and historic quotes\, poetry\, original works of art\, dramatic photographs\, and a dynamic space that encourages self-reflection\, this innovative exhibition weaves together the historical and the contemporary to illuminate the importance of these men within the context of rich community traditions. It invites visitors to consider predominant narratives and engage in the authentic stories of history\, politics\, art\, culture\, and activism. Twenty-five contemporary artists were invited to reflect and celebrate the significance of these ground-breaking individuals through their own creative vision. These works of art serve as counterpoint to the sumptuously backlit photographs and inspiring quotes\, and together honor the truth of the African American experience in history and today. \nWhile these men made their mark in a variety of disciplines—politics\, sports\, science\, entertainment\, business\, religion\, and more—all understood the value of asserting their own agency by owning their own stories. \nMen of Change was developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and made possible through the generous support of the Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services.

DESCRIPTION:Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument\, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute\, 16th Street Baptist Church\, the University of Illinois Center for Children’s Books\, Birmingham Public Library\, the Hoover Public Library\, The Morgan Project\, Make it Happen Children’s Theater\, Sloss Furnaces\, the Footsoldiers Headquarters\, the National Park Foundation\, The Ballard House Project\, and many more are collaborating on an event for 4th-8th grade students on Thursday September 14\, 2023 centered around the children’s book The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963. Christopher Paul Curtis\, the book’s author\, will address students from the sanctuary of 16th Street Baptist Church at 9am to start the day.  \nThe event will bring the book alive\, with many hands-on\, curriculum-based activities. For example\, students will listen to music of the 1960s\, play jacks and hop scotch\, read poetry by Langston Hughes\, and map out the route that the Watsons took from Flint\, Michigan to Birmingham\, Alabama. The hands-on event will run from 9am until noon. Afterwards\, middle school students have the option to attend a free screening of the Spike Lee film\, 4 Little Girls\, at the Lyric Theater through the efforts of The Morgan Project. This program is funded in part with a grant provided by the Alabama Humanities Alliance through the program efforts of 16th Street Baptist Church. \nFree transportation will be provided to Title I schools through a National Park Foundation grant. DESCRIPTION:Sally’s Night is a nationwide celebration of women in STEM led by the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum\, in collaboration with 21 Smithsonian Affiliate organizations. Sally’s Night honors Sally Ride’s legacy as an astronaut\, physicist\, educator\, and advocate for young people. SUMMARY:Book Signing: Little Black Boy I Love by Tiffany Reese
DESCRIPTION:Tiffany Lynette Reese was born in Birmingham\, Alabama in October of 1984. She was raised and educated in the Fairfield City School System. She developed a love for reading at a young age. Her love for reading later sparked her passion for writing. At the age of 8\, Tiffany began to write short stories and poetry. She has published two books of poetry and has now begun writing and publishing children’s books. She also loves encouraging and motivating the younger generation to do and be their best. Tiffany founded the nonprofit organization named VoiceUP Initiative which was created in February 2020 out of a dire need for our youth to be exposed to and have access to creative outlets\, tutoring services and much needed one on one attention. This is done by answering the call for inclusivity and by showing our youth that they matter. \nTiffany has won awards for her writing\, been featured on websites\, performed at several events\, and has served as a motivational speaker to up and coming high school graduates. She has also read to students at elementary schools.

DESCRIPTION:The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is excited to announce our 6th annual commemorative reenactment of the historic Children’s Crusade. Also known as the Children’s March\, this annual event is designed to bring together current students from the greater Birmingham area and Civil Rights Footsoldiers – the students of 1963 who heroically placed themselves on the frontline of a movement that changed the world. \nMorning Activities\nHigh School students from the Birmingham Metro Area are invited to join this engaging event.\nMorning activities include: \n\nA moderated conversation between student leaders & guidance counselors involved in the Children’s March of 1963 and those involved in the work today.\nReflections from Paul Kix\, on his newly released book\, You Have to be Prepared to Die Before You Can Begin to Live: Ten Weeks in Birmingham that Changed America.\nThree energizing presentations from Professor Doug Evans\, III\, Professor Keene Walker\, and Dr. Gerry White.\nSpoken word and riveting a cappella song will take place throughout the presentations.\n\nThe morning ends with Rev. Gwendolyn Webb presenting the roll call of participating schools and initiating the walk out. \nThe March\nCarrying placards displaying affirmations and calling for peace and rights\, students\, educators\, community leaders\, and Footsoldiers will reenact the 1963 Children’s March by ceremoniously walking across the street to the historic Kelly Ingram Park for our culminating rally. \nParticipants will enjoy the following: \n\nLunch\nMusic\nVendors\nA college fair\n\nTransportation will be provided for Title 1 funded schools. Event toolkits will also be provided to pre- registered groups. \nThis signature BCRI event kicks off “Youth Peace Weekend” in collaboration with the first-ever International Peace Conference and the Youth & Peace in Action and NewGen Peace Builders summit.
