SUMMARY:Foot Soldier's 63rd Anniversary Civil Rights Street Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The Civil Rights Activist Committee is hosting the Foot Soldiers’ 63rd anniversary celebration on May 2\, 2026. This year’s theme\, “Honoring the Legacy – Uniting the Neighborhoods – Inspiring the Nation\,” commemorates the 63rd anniversary of the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement of 1963\, including the historic Children’s March. This celebration honors the courageous young people who marched for justice and changed the course of American history. We believe there is no more fitting tribute than to have today’s students stand in the footsteps of the original Foot Soldiers. \nThe celebration will feature: \n\nMain Stage Program with tributes to Foot Soldiers\, musical performances\, and guest speakers\nCommunity Unity Village with booths representing Birmingham’s 99 neighborhoods\nYouth Legacy Zone featuring student exhibits\, art\, and storytelling projects\nEvening Candlelight Tribute and Unity Walk symbolizing reflection\, peace\, and ongoing progress\n\nThis event provides a powerful\, living-history educational experience for students of all ages. It is an opportunity to connect classroom learning about the Civil Rights Movement with the very ground where history was made—and to meet the Foot Soldiers who made it. For general event information\, please contact the Civil Rights Activist Committee at (205) 518-0321 or email info@cracfs.org. \nTo coordinate student performers\, MCs\, or marching bands\, please contact Charles Woods\, III\, Education Director & Coordinator of Outreach and Community Engagement at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute\, at (205) 328-9696 or cwoods@bcri.org. \nWe are grateful for your partnership in preserving and promoting the legacy of the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement. Together\, we can ensure that the courage of the 1963 Foot Soldiers continues to inspire the next generation.

SUMMARY:Invisible Warriors | Film Screening + Discussion
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Women’s History Month\, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is hosting a screening of Invisible Warriors: African American Women in World War II and a conversation exploring the legacy of Black women whose work helped shape American history. \nThe film highlights the stories of more than 600\,000 African American women who joined the wartime industrial workforce during World War II. Often referred to as the Black “Rosie the Riveters\,” these women challenged racism\, sexism\, and discrimination while helping power the nation’s war effort and expanding opportunities for future generations. \nFollowing the screening\, Deborah Bowie\, President and CEO of BCRI\, will moderate a discussion with: \n\nJanice Kelsey\, Foot Soldier\, Published Author\, and Retired Educator\nWilhelmina Thomas\, Community Historian and Living History Interpreter\nReverend Gwendolyn Webb\, Foot Soldier and Civil Rights Activist\n\nTogether\, they will explore how the Black Rosies–through their fight\, legacy\, and work ethic—influenced a generation of young people who would later become Foot Soldiers and activists in the Civil Rights Movement. \n\nRegistration \nPlease complete the form below to register for this event.

SUMMARY:Community of S.T.R.E.A.M.ers | Women in Aviation
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Women’s History Month\, the Community of S.T.R.E.A.Mers will explore the powerful stories of two trailblazing aviators: Captain Theresa Claiborne\, the first Black woman pilot in the U.S. Air Force\, and Captain Tee Frisby\, a Birmingham native whose aviation career inspires young people to pursue their dreams fearlessly. Through an engaging\, interdisciplinary session combining Reading\, Arts\, and Technology\, students will learn how these women shaped their own narratives despite historical barriers—and how they\, too\, can take ownership of their stories. \nThis month also marks the launch of a new exhibit expansion titled “Miss Representation\,” which examines the misrepresentation and underrepresentation of women—especially Black women—across history\, media\, education\, and public memory. The exhibit emphasizes the importance of seeing women as full\, complex leaders and creators within our society. \nTo bring these themes to life\, students will participate in a hands-on activity where they create their own newspaper front page. Using a guided template we provide\, participants will craft articles\, headlines\, and images that reflect their voices\, their futures\, and the stories they feel deserve more visibility. The goal is to empower students with literacy\, creativity\, and agency—reaffirming that their stories matter and deserve to be told. \nThis workshop will be led by Kizzy Frisby of Saylor’s Village\, daughter of Captain Tee Frisby. \n\nRegistration \nPlease complete the form below to register for this event.

SUMMARY:Mapping Black Migration
DESCRIPTION:Panel Discussion in partnership with the City of Birmingham Office of Public Affairs \nIn recognition of Black History Month\, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute\, in partnership with the City of Birmingham’s Office of Public Affairs\, will present Mapping Black Migration\, a dynamic panel discussion examining the historical and contemporary movements of Black Americans.
