Celebrate BCRI’s 25th Anniversary


As Alabama celebrates its bicentennial, BCRI is also celebrating the 25th anniversary of its opening on November 15, 1992. This year also marks several seminal events: The 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. MLK, Jr., on April 4, the 55th anniversary of the penning of the Letter from Birmingham Jail on April 16, and the 55th anniversary of the Children’s March on May 5th. BCRI will also celebrate Giving Sunday on May 6, 2018. Register on the form below to participate.

The Events:

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr King, BCRI will be free on April 4 from 10 am to 6 pm.  During the day, there will be choirs performing, African Drumming, a community libation ceremony and at 6:01 pm, there will be a moment of silence to reflect on the time of the assassination.
55th Anniversary of the Penning of Letter from Birmingham Jail: April 16
As part of the commemoration of the Letter From Birmingham Jail on April 16, BCRI has developed a video that features celebrities, youth and individuals from all over as they read portions of Letter From Birmingham Jail.  The full length video will be unveiled on April 16 and then will be permanently shown at BCRI as a contemporary visual in our Human Rights Gallery. BCRI will also unveil  “Foot Soldiers: Profiles of Courage  Then and Now” an exhibition by noted photographer and ALabama native Chester Higgins, Jr.
Children's March: May 5
BCRI will commemorate the 55th anniversary of the Children’s March on May 5th with a recreation of the March.  Starting at 12 noon at the St. Paul Methodist Church, the public will march along the same path as the Children’s March, which brought the Birmingham Struggle to the attention to the world.
Giving Sunday: May 6
Your church could raise money for BCRI on May 6; You could attend another church of a different faith or include a special prayer in your church bulletin provided by BCRI.
