Student's Tour of Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
10:00 A.M.
Students from the Alabama School for the Deaf will arrive at 10 a.m. to view BCRI's permanent exhibition and the special exhibition, History Through Deaf Eyes. Dignitaries from Gallaudet will meet and greet the youth.

Art Through Deaf Artists' Eyes Slide Presentation                             
Dr. Deb (Sonnenstrahl) Meranski, retired chair of Gallaudet University's Art Department, will give a slide presentation titled "Art Through Deaf Artists' Eyes." This program will be given Saturday, October 2, at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts at 2:00 p.m.  On Sunday, October 3, the presentation will take place at the Birmingham Museum of Art at 3:00 p.m. Dr. Meranski is the author of the acclaimed book "Deaf Artists in America." Both events are free and open to the public.

Closing Discussion & One Woman Show "Mama Cares:  It Runz In The Family"                                                                            Birmingham Civil Rights Institute/Rev. Abraham L. Woods, Jr. Community Meeting Room                                                                          2:00 P.M.
The closing program will take place at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute on Sunday, October 24 at 2 p.m.  Ms. Carolyn McCaskill-Henry and Ms. Evon Black will lead a discussion titled "Glancing Back, Shaping the Present, Imagining the Future." Ms. McCaskill-Henry is on the Deaf Studies faculty at Gallaudet University, and Ms. Black is an Account Manager for Alabama Sprint Relay.  At the conclusion of the discussion, Ms. Black will perform her one-woman show titled "Mama Cares." This event is free and open to the public.

Southern Museum of Flight

The airplane owned by America's first Deaf pilot, Nellie Willhite, is on permanent display at the Southern Museum of Flight. Yes, the first Deaf pilot was a woman, and she got her license just one year after Charles Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic! The Southern Museum of Flight is located at 4343 North 73rd Street and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 4:30 pm.  The museum is closed on Monday.  Please call the Southern Museum of Flight at (205) 833-8226 for more information.
