The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute Endowment includes four basic areas:
- General Endowment - Education Endowment - Archives Endowment - Exhibitions Endowment
The BCRI Endowment is carefully managed to preserve principal and produce a balance of investment earnings and capital appreciation. Donors may make gifts of any amount to the General Endowment through the Institute's Tribute Fund in honor or memory of family members, friends, and business associates. These commemorative gifts are recognized annually in the Institute's newsletters and annual report. Donors of $15,000 and up may name permanent funds in honor of a family member, friend, or associate, and pay off the pledge over a three to five-year period. Named permanent fund pledges can be paid through a combination of different types of gifts (cash, securities, personal and real property, etc.). Donors may choose to establish a named endowed fund in a basic area, such as Archives, or they may chose to establish a fund in a more specialized area, such as Youth Education. Unless donors specifically indicate otherwise, the principal or book value of an endowment gift is maintained in perpetuity, and only the annual earnings and part of the market gain (capital appreciation) are spent each year in support of the Institute's program of service. Thus, the Endowment ensures permanence! Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Camelia) Holmes, Jr., of Birmingham, Alabama, are creating our first named fund, the Robert and Camelia Holmes Endowed Fund.
