Bread We Have is an exhibition of photographs highlighting the present living conditions of Somalis in the Diaspora in East Africa following the 1991 Somali crisis and 1990s nation-building, peace-keeping strategies of the United States and United Nations. The photographs document Somalis' living conditions in Nairobi and East Leigh (a Nairobi suburb), Kenya, the deserted Utange Refugee camp in Mombassa, Kenya, and in Kampala, Uganda.
An accompanying film--to be shown at the BCRI on Thursday, August 26 at 6:00 PM--includes photos and interviews with Somali refugees. The film examines reactions by African citizens in Kampala, Uganda, as well as Nairobi, East Leigh, and Mombassa, Kenya, to the Somali presence in their places since the 1991 crisis.
Dr. Lisa Pickett, an Adjunct Professor of Political Science at Samford University, serves as Executive Director of The Social, Political and Economic Research Institute (SPER), which she founded in March 2000. Dr. Pickett will be present at the August 26 showing and discussion of her documentary film.
