Birmingham's Kelly Ingram Park was the staging ground for Civil Rights rallies, demonstrations and marches during the tumultous years of the 1960s. It was in Kelly Ingram Park that Birmingham police and firemen turned attack dogs and high-powered hoses on participants rallying for human rights and simple decency. These images will forever be associated with Birmingham and Kelly Ingram Park.
Now sponsors and partners of the new Kelly Ingram Park Audio Tour have come together to record the voices of Civil Rights activists. Reverend Fred L. Shuttlesworth, Reverend Abraham Woods, his brother, Reverend Calvin Woods, and other activists and foot soldiers--Reverend C. Herbert Oliver, Gwen Gamble, Colonel Stone Johnson and Yvonne Turner--recall their experiences in the park on an audio tour delivered through the use of a hand-held wand.
Wands are distributed from the Ticket Booth of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and are available for a $5 rental fee. (You must be 18 years old to rent the wand. Please be prepared to leave a driver's license while you use the audio tour equipment.) Audio walking tours are not reserved in advance.
